voltage clamp

voltage clamp
voltage clamp n stabilization of a membrane potential by depolarization and maintenance at a given potential by means of an electric current from a source outside the living system esp. in order to study the flow of potassium and sodium ions independently of the effects of changes in the membrane potential

an electronic technique employing the feedback principle to impose a fixed potential difference across a cell membrane; used in the study of ion channels. Voltage across the membrane is fixed at a set level and the current changes to counterbalance any induced flow of ions; the current change is a measure of the change in conductance of the membrane for one or more specific ions.
