umbilical hernia n a hernia of abdominal viscera at the navel called also exomphalos

a type of abdominal hernia in which part of the intestine protrudes at the umbilicus and is covered with skin and subcutaneous tissue; it may occur as a congenital anomaly or as a complication of pregnancy or a surgical incision. Cf. omphalocele. Called also exomphalos and exumbilication.
