tyrosine hydroxylase

tyrosine hydroxylase
tyrosine hydroxylase n an enzyme that catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of catecholamines (as dopamine and norepinephrine)

* * *

ty·ro·sine hy·droxy·lase (TH) (tiґro-sēn hi-drokґsə-lās) a monooxygenase that activates molecular oxygen to catalyze the hydroxylation of tyrosine to dopa; it is found in adrenal medulla and catecholaminergic neurons and requires the cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait caused by mutation of the TH gene, which encodes the enzyme, results in dopa-responsive dystonia. In official nomenclature, called tyrosine 3-monooxygenase [EC 1.14.16.2].
