trans·am·i·nase tran(t)s-'am-ə-.nās, tranz-, -.nāz n an enzyme-promoting transamination called also aminotransferase

* * *

an enzyme that catalyses the transfer of an amino group from an amino acid to an a-keto acid in the process of transamination. Examples include aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which catalyses the transamination of glutamate and oxaloacetate to a-ketoglutarate and aspartate, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), converting glutamate and pyruvate to a-ketoglutarate and alanine.

trans·am·i·nase (trans-amґĭ-nās) [EC 2.6.1] a sub-subclass of enzymes of the transferase class that catalyze the transfer of an amino group from a donor (generally an amino acid) to an acceptor (generally a 2-keto acid). Most are pyridoxal phosphate proteins. Called also aminotransferase.
