an exfoliative skin disease seen primarily in adults as a severe reaction to a drug, although it may rarely be caused by infection, neoplastic disease, or chemical exposure. There is full-thickness epidermal necrosis that results in subepidermal separation, bulla formation, and inflammatory changes in the dermis; the widespread loss of epidermis leaves raw areas where the skin surface looks scalded. Called also Lyell syndrome and nonstaphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. Cf. staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome.
