(tiґ cheґ) [Chinese] a system of postures linked by elegant and graceful movements, originating in China and existing in a number of styles, whose purpose is to balance yin and yang, creating inner and outer harmony. Physiologically, tai chi improves cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and respiratory function; because it demands intense concentration, it increases central nervous system function and is useful for the treatment of stress-related conditions, obesity, and chronic pain.
