su·per·ox·ide dis·mu·tase (soo″pər-okґsīd dis-muґtās) [EC 1.15.1.1] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the reduction of superoxide anions to hydrogen peroxide, protecting cells against dangerous levels of superoxide.
