striate cortex n an area of the brain that receives visual impulses, contains a conspicuous band of myelinated fibers, and is located mostly in the walls and along the edges of the calcarine sulcus of the occipital lobe called also visual projection area

Brodmann area 17: the part of the occipital lobe of the cerebral cortex that receives the fibers of the optic radiation from the lateral geniculate body and is the primary receptive area for vision; so called because of the prominent broad line or stria of Gennari. Called also striate area or first visual area.
