sphingomyelin
sphin·go·my·elin .sfiŋ-gō-'mī-ə-lən n any of a group of crystalline phosphatides that are obtained esp. from nerve tissue and that on hydrolysis yield a fatty acid (as lignoceric acid), sphingosine, choline, and phosphoric acid

n.
a phospholipid that contains sphingosine, a fatty acid, phosphoric acid, and choline. Sphingomyelins are found in large amounts in brain and nerve tissue.

sphin·go·my·elin (sfing″go-miґə-lin) any of the group of sphingolipids in which the head group is phosphorylated choline, making them sphingophospholipids; they are the only phospholipids not derived from glycerol in humans. They occur in membranes, primarily in nervous tissue, and are accumulated abnormally in Niemann-Pick disease.
