a sodium salt used, with sodium thiosulphate, to treat cyanide poisoning. It is administered by injection and may cause digestive upsets, dizziness, headache, fainting, and cyanosis.

[USP] an antidote for cyanide poisoning, NaNO2; it reduces hemoglobin to methemoglobin, which has a greater affinity for cyanide than does cytochrome oxidase. It is also used as a preservative in cured meats and other foods.
