Ringer Sidney (1835-1910)
British physiologist. Ringer spent his entire career as a member of the faculty of a university hospital. He was known as the author of a popular handbook on therapeutics that was a practical treatise summarizing the actions and effects of drugs. Having a lifelong interest in pharmacology, he contributed papers on the actions of various substances, including digitalis, atropine, muscarine, and pilocarpine. From 1882 to 1885 in a series of classic experiments on frog hearts, Ringer developed a balanced solution for keeping isolated organs functional for long periods of time. The solution is now called Ringer's solution.
