rheumatoid factor
rheumatoid factor n an autoantibody of high molecular weight that reacts against immunoglobulins of the class IgG and is often present in rheumatoid arthritis

* * *

(RF) antibodies directed against antigenic determinants, i.e., Gm, in the Fc region of the IgG class of immunoglobulins; these are found in the serum of about 80 per cent of persons with classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis, but only about 20 per cent of those with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid factors may be of the IgM, IgG, or IgA classes of immunoglobulins, although serologic tests measure only IgM. Rheumatoid factors also occur in other connective tissue diseases and infectious diseases, such as Sjцgren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, sarcoidosis, subacute bacterial endocarditis, hepatitis A, and leprosy.
