retroperitoneal fibrosis

retroperitoneal fibrosis
retroperitoneal fibrosis n proliferation of fibrous tissue behind the peritoneum often leading to blockage of the ureters called also Ormond's disease

* * *

a condition in which a dense plaque of fibrous tissue develops behind the peritoneum adjacent to the abdominal aorta. The ureters become encased and hence obstructed, causing acute anuria and renal failure. The obstruction can be relieved by nephrostomy or the insertion of double J stent. In the acute phase steroid administration may help, but in established RPF ureterolysis is required.

deposition of fibrous tissue in the retroperitoneal space; it may cause blockage of an intestinal loop or a ureter; in the latter case the result will be hydronephrosis, impaired renal function, and eventually renal failure. Called also Ormond disease and perirenal fasciitis.
