pro·to·ver·a·trine .prōt-ō-'ver-ə-.trēn, -trən n
1) either of two toxic crystalline alkaloids obtained from hellebores of the genus Veratrum (esp. V. viride of No. America and V. album of Europe) and used in the treatment of hypertension called also respectively protoveratrine A, protoveratrine B
2) a mixture of protoveratrine A and B used to treat hypertension

pro·to·ver·a·trine (pro″to-verґə-trēn) an ester alkaloid obtained from the liliaceous plant Veratrum album L. It occurs in two forms, designated A and B, both of which have antihypertensive properties. Protoveratrine A is said to be more active than the B form; the two are usually administered in combination.
