positive end-expiratory pressure
- positive end-expiratory pressure
positive end-expiratory pressure n a technique of assisting breathing by increasing the air pressure in the lungs and air passages near the end of expiration so that an increased amount of air remains in the lungs following expiration

(PEEP) a method of positive pressure ventilation used in conjunction with mechanical ventilation; pressure is maintained above the level of atmospheric pressure at the end of exhalation. This is achieved by preventing the complete release of gas during exhalation, usually by means of a valve within the circuit. The purpose is to increase the volume of gas remaining in the lungs at the end of exhalation, thus reducing the shunting of blood through the lungs and improving gas exchange; done in acute respiratory failure to allow reduction of inspired O2 concentrations. Cf. continuous positive airway p.
