pneu·mo·nol·y·sis .n(y)ü-mə-'näl-ə-səs n, pl -y·ses -.sēz either of two surgical procedures to permit collapse of a lung:
a) separation of the parietal pleura from the fascia of the chest wall called also extrapleural pneumonolysis
b) separation of the visceral and parietal layers of the pleura called also intrapleural pneumonolysis

pneu·mo·nol·y·sis (noo″mo-nolґĭ-sis) [pneumono- + -lysis] division of the tissues attaching the lung to the wall of the chest cavity so that the lung collapses inward; it was formerly a common method of collapse therapy (q.v.) and is still sometimes done to allow access during thoracic surgery. Called also pneumolysis.
