pho·to·chro·mo·gen (fo″to-kroґmə-jən) [photo- + chromo- + -gen] a microorganism whose pigmentation develops as a result of exposure to light, e.g., Mycobacterium kansasii (pathogenic for humans), which is yellow-orange if grown in the light, and almost colorless if grown in the dark. See also nontuberculous mycobacteria, under mycobacterium.
