a severe type of shellfish poisoning caused by ingestion of bivalve mollusks that are contaminated with dinoflagellates containing saxitoxin, such as species of Gonyaulax and related genera. Symptoms include paresthesias of the face and limbs, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes muscle weakness, paralysis, and respiratory failure that can be fatal.
