necrotic enteritis n : either of two often fatal infectious diseases marked esp. by intestinal inflammation and necrosis and by diarrhea:
a) one affecting young swine and caused by a bacterium of the genus Salmonella (S. choleraesuis) called also necro
b) one affecting poultry and esp. young chickens and turkeys and caused by a bacterium of the genus Clostridium (C. perfringens)

1. a type of porcine proliferative enteritis in which the intestinal walls become necrotic. 2. enterotoxemia in chickens, often with fatal hemorrhaging, due to infection by Clostridium perfringens type A or C.
