a congenital melanocytic nevus that is flat, smooth, and blue-gray to brown; the usual location is in the lumbosacral area. It occurs far more in dark-skinned people (especially those of East Asian or Native American ancestry) than in light-skinned individuals, and it usually disappears before 5 years of age. Called also blue or sacral s. and mongolian macula.
