ma·late de·hy·dro·gen·ase (maґlāt de-hiґdro-jən-ās) [EC 1.1.1.37] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidation of L-malate to oxaloacetate, reducing NAD+>. The enzyme occurs both in the mitochondria and in the cytosol. The reaction is important in the tricarboxylic acid cycle and in the malate-aspartate electron shuttle. See illustration at tricarboxylic acid cycle, under cycle.
