lo·co·weed (loґko-wēd) [Sp. loco insane] any of numerous leguminous plants that grow in arid regions of North America, primarily members of the genera Astragalus, Hosackia, Oxytropis, and Sophora; they contain a variety of toxins and cause locoism in horses, cattle, and sheep.
