lepra reaction n one of the acute episodes of chills and fever, malaise, and skin eruption occurring in the chronic course of leprosy

an aggravation of lumps on the skin caused by leprosy, accompanied by fever and malaise.

an acute or subacute hypersensitivity reaction occurring either during the course of antileprosy treatment or in untreated cases of leprosy. There are two types, now often called type 1 and type 2. Type 1 includes the reversal or upgrading reaction and the downgrading reaction, which are delayed hypersensitivity reactions. Type 2 is erythema nodosum leprosum, a type III hypersensitivity reaction.
