karaya gum n any of several laxative vegetable gums that are similar to tragacanth and are often used as substitutes for it, that are obtained from tropical Asian trees (genera Sterculia of the family Sterculiaceae and Cochlospermum of the family Bixaceae), and that include esp. one derived from an Indian tree (S. urens) called also gum karaya, karaya, sterculia gum

the dried gummy exudation from Sterculia urens or other species of Sterculia, which becomes gelatinous when moisture is added; used as a bulk laxative. Because of its adhesive properties, products containing karaya gum are used as dental adhesives and as skin adhesives and protective skin barriers in the fitting and care of colostomy appliances and in other conditions involving an artificial stoma. Called also sterculia g.
