hy·drox·y·lase (hi-drokґsə-lās) a general term used to denote enzymes of the oxidoreductase class that catalyze the formation of a hydroxyl group on a substrate by incorporation of oxygen from O2 [EC 1.13, 1.14]. Most are monooxygenases incorporating one atom of oxygen; more rarely the term is applied to a dioxygenase hydroxylating two substrates.
