he·mo·zo·in (he″mo-zoґin) [hemo- + Gr. zōon animal] a pigment produced from the hemoglobin in the host's erythrocytes by malarial parasites and enabling the parasites to sequester in benign form. In chronic cases of malaria, hemozoin collects in tissues, e.g., the spleen, giving the organ a grayish to dark brown or black color. Also written haemozoin. Called also malarial pigment.
