a condition seen in cattle and sheep in Australia, New Zealand, and North America after they graze on tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) contaminated by the fungus Acremonium coenophialum, which contains a toxic principle similar to that of ergot; characteristics include lameness of the hind feet that may progress to necrosis and dry gangrene and may spread to the ears and tail. Called also fescue lameness or toxicosis, tall fescue lameness, and fescue.
