any one of a group of genetically determined disorders characterized by blistering of skin and mucous membranes. In the simple forms the blistering is induced by injury. In the more serious (dystrophic) forms the blistering may occur spontaneously; some of the dystrophic forms of the disease are fatal.

a heterogeneous group of chronic, mostly hereditary, mechanobullous skin diseases. Inherited types are divided into three major groups on the basis of the level at which blistering occurs in the basement membrane: e. bullosa dystrophica, junctional e. bullosa, and e. bullosa simplex; these are further divided into subtypes based on pattern of inheritance, morphology, and distribution of lesions.
