ego ideal n the positive standards, ideals, and ambitions that according to psychoanalytic theory are assimilated from the superego

the component of the superego comprising the internalized image of what one desires to become and toward the attainment of which the ego strives, formed through conscious or unconscious identification with or emulation of one who plays a significant role or has a place of esteem in the life of the developing child.
