dicrotic notch n a secondary upstroke in the descending part of a pulse tracing corresponding to the transient increase in aortic pressure upon closure of the aortic valve called also dicrotic wave

a small downward deflection in the arterial pulse or pressure contour immediately following closure of the aortic valve and preceding the dicrotic wave; sometimes used as a marker for the end of systole or the ejection period.
