treatment of mental disorders, primarily depression, by induction of convulsions. The type now almost universally used is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), in which the convulsions are induced by electric current. In earlier forms, convulsions were induced pharmacologically, at first by pentylenetetrazol and later by flurothyl.
