an enzyme, formed by disease-producing varieties of certain bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus, that causes blood plasma to coagulate. Staphylococci that are positive when tested for coagulase production are classified as belonging to the species Staphylococcus aureus.

co·ag·u·lase (ko-agґu-lās) a bacterial enzyme that reacts with a cofactor found in blood plasma to catalyze the formation of fibrin from fibrinogen. It is produced by Staphylococcus aureus and by Yersinia pestis.
