a broad-spectrum quinolone antibiotic that can be given orally and is particularly useful against Gram-negative bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, that are resistant to all other oral antibiotics. Side-effects can include nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and headache. It is also given as eye drops for eye infections. Trade names: Ciloxan, Ciproxin.

cip·ro·flox·a·cin (sip″ro-flokґsə-sin) [USP] a fluoroquinolone antibacterial effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including some strains resistant to penicillins, cephalosporins, and aminoglycosides.
