an antiseptic used as a general disinfectant for skin and mucous membranes or as a preservative (for example, in eye drops). Chlorhexidine is used in solution, creams, gels, and lozenges and in some preparations is combined with cetrimide. In very dilute solution it is used as an effective mouthwash for the prevention or control of infections of the mouth. Skin sensitivity to chlorhexidine occurs rarely. Trade name: Hibitane.
