symmetric demyelination affecting the base and tegmentum of the pons, possibly caused by rapid correction of hyponatremia, and characterized by rapidly progressing paraparesis or quadriparesis, dysarthria, dysphagia, and impaired consciousness; areas of demyelination may also occur outside the pons. It is associated with a variety of conditions, including alcoholism, malignancies, burns, and liver transplantation.
