Buer·ger's disease 'bər-gərz-, 'bu̇r- n thromboangiitis of the small arteries and veins of the extremities and esp. the feet resulting in occlusion, ischemia, and gangrene called also thromboangiitis obliterans
Buerger Leo (1879-1943)
American pathologist. In 1908 Buerger published an article on thromboangiitis obliterans. He presented the first clear description of this disease and distinguished it from endarteritis obliterans.

an inflammatory condition of the arteries, especially in the legs, that predominantly affects young male cigarette smokers. Intermittent claudication (pain due to reduced blood supply) and gangrene of the limbs may develop. Coronary thrombosis may occur and venous thrombosis is common. The treatment is similar to that of atheroma but cessation of smoking is essential to prevent progression of the disease. Medical name: thromboangiitis obliterans.
