blue·tongue (blooґtung″) a viral disease of sheep, cattle, goats, and wild ruminants, transmitted by biting flies of the genus Culicoides; the etiologic agent is an orbivirus. Characteristics include inflammation, ulceration, and necrosis of the tongue, lips, and dental pads, and fever.
