biuret reaction

biuret reaction
biuret reaction n a reaction that is shown by biuret, proteins, and most peptides on treatment in alkaline solution with copper sulfate and that results in a violet color

* * *

formation of a chelate having an intense violet-red color when biuret or compounds having two or more adjacent peptide bonds (e.g., proteins) are reacted with copper sulfate in alkaline solution; the reaction forms the basis for a colorimetric method for detection of protein (biuret test).
