big·head (bigґhed) 1. bulging of the skull bones of an animal, due to osteomalacia. 2. acute infection of young rams by Clostridium novyi, which enters the tissues through head wounds acquired in fighting; it is characterized by intense edematous swelling of the head, face, and neck. Called also swellhead and swelled head. 3. photosensitization in white-faced sheep after ingestion of certain plants, characterized by thickening and pendulous swelling of the face and ears. 4. hydrocephalus in mink. 5. nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism.
