a technique for examining the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The patient swallows barium sulphate to coat the lining of the organs. Granules that produce gas to distend the stomach may be given to produce a double contrast effect. A series of X-rays is taken. This can be used to diagnose tumours, gastric and duodenal ulcers, hiatus hernia, and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. Many indications for this examination have been replaced by the use of endoscopy.
