OCD (Obsessive-compulsive disorder)
- OCD (Obsessive-compulsive disorder)
- A psychiatric disorder characterized by obsessive thoughts and compulsive actions, often concerned with cleaning, checking, counting, or hoarding. OCD appears to be rooted in malfunction or insult to the basal ganglia, a structure within the brain that controls automatic activities. OCD often runs in families and is now believed to have genetic origins. The signs and symptoms of OCD wax and wane. Diagnosis is by interview and observation. Treatment is by cognitive behavioral therapy and/or medication.
