Mohs surgery

Mohs surgery
A special type of surgery used for the treatment of skin cancer, especially basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. The purpose of Mohs surgery is to remove all of the cancerous tissue and as little of the healthy tissue as possible. It is especially helpful when the doctor is not sure of the shape and depth of the tumor. In addition, this method is used to remove large tumors, those in hard-to-treat places, and cancers that have recurred. Mohs technique is microscopically controlled. The area of skin is removed under local anesthetic. It is then carefully oriented and serially examined under the microscope to ensure that all of the tumor has been removed. If not, the procedure is repeated until the entire tumor is removed. The American surgeon Frederic E. Mohs (1910-) devised this system of microscopically controlled removal of skin tumors while he was still a medical student.

Mohs micrographic surgery a technique of microscopically controlled serial excision of high-risk, nonmelanoma skin cancers. Formerly the tissue was removed after being fixed in situ with zinc chloride paste (Mohs chemosurgery); later this was modified to a more tissue-sparing technique in which serial excisions of fresh tissue would be done with microscopic analysis. Called also Mohs technique.
