A protein associated with actin microfilaments; found in intercalated discs of cardiac muscle and focal adhesion plaques; may have a role in how a tumor virus causes pleiotropic effects of transformation. [L. vinculum, bond, fr. vincio, to bind + -in]

vin·cu·lin (vinґku-lin) a 130-kD protein, found in muscle, fibroblasts, and epithelial cells, that binds to α-actinin and talin; it is associated with attachment plaques and with talin mediates cell-cell and cell–extracellular matrix adhesion by linking actin filaments of the cytoskeleton to the cytoplasmic domains of β-integrins.
