Archaic term for a subkingdom of the animal kingdom containing worms and wormlike organisms; an unnatural division no longer in taxonomic use. [L. vermis, worm]

Ver·mes 'vər-(.)mēz n pl any of several major divisions of the animal kingdom: as
a) in former classifications a taxon containing all invertebrates with the exception of the arthropods
b) in some esp former classifications a taxon comprising the typically soft-bodied and more or less vermiform invertebrates including the flatworms, roundworms, annelid worms, and minor forms, and usu. held to be a purely artificial grouping
