a tetrapeptide derived from IgG (see immunoglobulin), produced mainly in the spleen, that stimulates neutrophil activity (phagocytosis). Levels of tuftsin are reduced after splenectomy, resulting in diminished resistance to infection, especially by encapsulated organisms.

tuft·sin (tuftґsin) [Tufts University + -in] a tetrapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) cleaved from IgG that stimulates phagocytosis by neutrophils. It is produced primarily in the spleen; hereditary tuftsin deficiency and tuftsin deficiency following splenectomy result in increased susceptibility to certain infections.
