a drug that prevents the breakdown of blood clots in the circulation (fibrinolysis) by blocking the activation of plasminogen to form plasmin, i.e. it is an antifibrinolytic drug. It is administered by mouth as an antidote to overdosage by fibrinolytic drugs and to control severe bleeding, for example after surgery or to treat menorrhagia. tran·ex·am·ic ac·id (tran″ək-samґik) an antifibrinolytic that acts by competitively inhibiting activation of plasminogen; it is used as a hemostatic in the prophylaxis and treatment of severe hemorrhage associated with excessive fibrinolysis, such as that following oral surgery in patients with hemophilia; administered orally or intravenously.
