A colorless liquid obtained by the dry distillation of tolu and other resinous bodies, and also derived from coal tar; its physical and chemical properties resemble those of benzene. Used in explosives and dyes, and as a solvent in the extraction of various principles from plants. SYN: methylbenzene, toluol.

tol·u·ene (tolґu-ēn) the hydrocarbon methylbenzene, C6H5·CH3; a colorless liquid derived by the catalytic reforming of petroleum on the fractional distillation of cal-tar light oil. It is an organic solvent used in rubber and plastic cements, paint removers, etc. Poisoning may result from ingesting the solvent or inhaling its concentrated vapors. Called also methyl benzene.
