A developmental anomaly involving molar teeth in which the bifurcation or trifurcation of the roots is very near the apex, resulting in an abnormally large and long pulp chamber with exceedingly short pulp canals. [L. taurus, bull, + G. odous, tooth]

tau·ro·don·tism (taw″ro-donґtiz-əm) [taur- + odont- + -ism] a variation in tooth form characterized by prism-shaped molars with large pulp spaces, resulting from branching of the root only in the middle (mesotaurodontism), or in the apical third or not at all (hypertaurodontism).
