split·ting (splitґing) 1. the division of a single object into two or more objects or parts. 2. in psychoanalytic theory, a primitive defense mechanism in which “objects” (persons) possessing a natural mix of positive and negative attributes are perceived as being either “all good” or “all bad.” Characteristic of very young children, it is also seen in patients with borderline personality disorder and sometimes in those with other personality disorders or psychoses.
