A bacterial cell from which the rigid cell wall has been incompletely removed. The bacterium loses its characteristic shape and becomes round. [sphero- + G. plastos, formed]

sphe·ro·plast 'sfir-ə-.plast, 'sfer- n a bacterium or yeast cell that has been modified by nutritional or environmental factors or by artificial means (as by the use of a lysozyme) and that is characterized by partial loss of the cell wall and by increased osmotic sensitivity

sphe·ro·plast (sfērґo-plast) a membrane-bound, spherical cell that results after partial or complete removal of the cell wall from a bacterial, yeast, or fungal cell; it is dependent for its integrity on an isotonic or hypertonic medium. Cf. protoplast (def. 3).
